Montalcino is a sea of gold. But why aren’t the vines “going to sleep”?

A photo and note from Fattoria dei Barbi owner and winemaker Stefano Cinelli Colombini’s Facebook this week.

The colors of fall in Montalcino are as magical as ever!

This is the Pinzina vineyard at Fattoria dei Barbi. It’s a sea of gold.

Despite the recent rainfall, the leaves are still on the vines. And here and there you can see green leaves.

It’s beautiful. Very beautiful. But it’s not normal.

At this point, the vines should be dormant. Especially after a vintage like this year’s, which was very productive, they should be resting.

But that’s not what’s happening.

The Montalcino landscape is simply enchanting right now, with colors that are getting lighter but still with a lot of green.

It might be a good time (after we enjoy the view) to ask ourselves a few questions.

Why hasn’t the countryside started to rest? It’s already cold and the mornings are almost chilly enough to make you want to wear your overcoat when you leave the house.

I’m not sure why this is happening. After such a great harvest with high yields and excellent wines, I have a lot of questions but not a lot of answers.
