Harvest 2018 / Maremma / Merlot / Montalcino

Early vintage 2018 notes: Stefano takes a look at Barbi’s Maremma harvest

Click here to see the video that Stefano shot this week in his Maremma vineyards.

A note from Stefano:

This is a Merlot vineyard on Fattoria dei Barbi’s Maremma estate. We took samples from the vines yesterday before it rained: 12.8% potential alcohol and 6.6 g/l acidity.

Despite what everyone was expecting after a rainy and cool season, the harvest will come early this year.

That’s why we are carpeting all of our vineyards taking samples, in Montalcino too.

With these crazy seasons, there’s no telling what the results will be.

In any case, the leaves are gorgeous, as you can see in the image.

And the grapes look excellent, too (although you can never be certain; and that’s not just because we are a superstitious lot!). The fruit looks very healthy as well.

What will this vintage be like?

All things considered, I should have the first wines by the end of Setpember and then I’ll have a better sense of what this vintage is going to be.
