“It was a really interesting event,” said Fattoria dei Barbi owner Stefano Cinelli Colombini in an interview with the popular Italian wine news portal MontalcinoNews.com. He was referring to the recent Topping-Off and Re-corking ceremony and tasting that he hosted last weekend at the estate. Guests and collectors were allowed to bring bottles that were at least 20 years old to be topped-off with wine from the same vintage and the resealed using a new cork.
“We had a great turn-out and a lot of people sent their bottles for us to re-cork. I’m thinking that this might be a dry-run for the ceremony we have planned for next year.
The Fattoria dei Barbi has a library of its wines stretching back to the late 19th century.
According to MontalcinoNews, Stefano is planning an even bigger event for 2018.
“We are currently looking at a large event for 2018 to celebrate the nearly 130 years of wines that we have” at the winery. “A tasting spanning 100 years of Brunello, including a couple of wines from every decade. And we are also thinking about hosting a Vin Santo event in 2019. We have 150 years of Vin Santo in our cellars. And I might even open a bottle from the 1800s. It will be a truly unique event.”
