Here’s a note on an unusual photo taken by Fattoria dei Barbi owner Stefano Cinelli Colombini last week when they began harvesting the red grapes on the Tuscan coast. It will still be a while for harvest to begin Montalcino. But picking isn’t far off…
A highly unusual image from this year’s harvest (above).
This is a Merlot vine from the Fattoria dei Barbi’s Scansano estate. We picked it on Friday of last week. The berries were ripe but not overly so or particularly concentrated. 21.8 grams/liter of sugars, 6.7 acidity and normal pH.
The grapes were brown-colored, as they usually are around mid-September. The must was excellent.
But as you can see, the vegetative production hasn’t been diminished and the vines show no sign of going dormant. A mystery!
