Above: Older and rare vintages of Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello di Montalcino can be purchased at the estate.
“Fattoria dei Barbi is one of Montalcino’s historic properties, even producing Brunello from the same vineyard since 1892,” wrote Andrew McMurray, co-owner and voice of leading U.S. retailer Zachys in his newsletter last week.
“But what separates them from others is the value they delivered in 2010… And what is even more exciting here is that Barbi is producing straight Brunello that recalls the glory years of the sixties and seventies. As James Suckling noted, this is the ‘best wine from here for ages.’ These are wines of structure that will reward with time displaying the signature notes of traditional Brunello – black cherry, dried fruit, baked earth, leather, and tobacco. What’s not to love here?!”
As Italian wine buyer and co-owner of Zachys, one of the top fine wine retailers in the world, where he has worked for more than 20 years, it’s safe to say that Andrew knows a thing or two about Brunello di Montalcino!
