Rosso di Montalcino

Ain’t no “baby Brunello”: Rosso di Montalcino, the perfect expression of Sangiovese for summer

Summer is here and it’s a time when we tend to reach for lighter-bodied wines that focus on freshness, approachability, and versatility at the dinner table. In other words, it’s the time of year when we tend to drink more Rosso di Montalcino.

Generally, Rosso di Montalcino is made from younger-vine fruit and is vinified in a much less tannic style than Brunello.

But please don’t call it “baby Brunello”: it’s an entirely different expression of Sangiovese, a unique and distinct style of wine that we love.

The following are Stefano’s notes for the two labels that Fattoria dei Barbi produces. The Colombini isn’t available in the U.S. but you will often find it on wine lists in Italy’s top restaurants.

Rosso di Montalcino D.O.C.

The wine: 100 percent Sangiovese from Montalcino sourced from the same vineyards where our Brunello is grown. The wine is the result of a careful selection of the most aromatic and most elegant but less tannic grapes. This is an important wine but fresh and rich in aroma and perfect for those who wish to enjoy a “special occasion” wine every day.

Tasting notes: Vibrant ruby red. Cherry aromas with hints of flowers and spices. Delicious on the palate and ready to drink.

Suggested pairings: Perfect with roast or grilled red or white meats, bean soups, fresh cheeses, mushrooms, and roast chestnuts. A wonderfully versatile wine.

Notes: Serve at 16°C

Rosso di Montalcino D.O.C. “Colombini”

The wine: A cuvée made of our most classic and structured Sangiovese from our best casks of Rosso di Montalcino. As a mark of distinction, we have used a label from 1957 for this wine. It’s reserved for our best Italian clients, a gesture of thanks to those who have supported us with friendship over the years.

Tasting notes: Vibrant ruby red. Intense cherry aromas with light notes of flowers and spices. Delightful in the mouth and ready to drink.

Suggested pairings: Perfect with roast or grilled red or white meats, bean soups, fresh cheeses, mushrooms, and roast chestnuts. A wonderfully versatile wine.

Notes: Serve at 16°C.
